Camaraderie

That, feeling of comfort and trust with someone or something. The unexplained connection between two people or the instinctive joy you feel when meeting someone or experience something or someplace new. A friendship that takes off so unexpectedly! That spark that connects you with someone is sometimes inexplicable, but comforting. It may last for a moment or two, it could last for a lifetime of friendship or partnership of understanding, acceptance and familiarity. The interconnectedness of people across different planes in your life and intimacy between people and their surroundings nurtures your person, uplifts and colors your life, your work.

These relationships are part of what make you the person you are, each one an instrument impacting your life. It is what has affected us to create and curate the performances we have for you today. That between – a father and daughter, master and apprentice, fashion designer and artistic director, teacher and student, two colleagues, seniors and juniors they all add depth and perspective to our rhythms, movements, richness, lightness or heaviness. They are what fuels the camaraderie with our creativity.

Read the Artistic Note before the show —

it holds the stories that shaped tonight’s performance.

As I sat waiting for the ‘Camaraderie’ press conference to begin, I had little time to think about what I wanted to say that day. We never seem to have enough time, but I am deeply proud of everything that we have achieved. Despite our consistent crazy schedules, I know that we deliver incredible work. This conviction, for me, comes from having the right people in our corner.

The right people are open to your unconventional ideas. They stay with you throughout the years, grow and learn with you. They challenge and allow you to be better, ride the challenges and celebrate the highs with you. In ‘Camaraderie,’ there is chemistry that just works and relationships that allow one another to make mistakes, speak, and listen. It enables us to effectively create for our audiences.

Pieces curated for this production are a reminder of how and where we started. Revised compositions reflect the growth of the team, the strengthening of friendship and comradeship, and the willingness to take risks. ‘Rhythm Ride’, ‘Rhythm Within’, ‘The Taiko’s Duel’ and ‘Flowers Thrusting’ will offer new perspectives, and evoke fresh emotions.

As artistic director I want my team to have the space to grow, to believe themselves capable of doing more. From, Jimmy sharing the stage with his 6-year-old daughter for the first time. Jack, Zhe Hao and Yamato expanding their journey of composing with Leow Yunn. DeafBeat training another gamelan player and our young HPA students ready to perform with us. To Sudi, Umar, Kathyn, and Zam consistently working their expertise into our collaborations. We are all rooted in the right relationships.

Opening night on the 14th of November 2025, will mark one year of my father’s passing. He was the epitome of camaraderie – friendly, witty, and so trusting. Even during the toughest of times, I could leave him waiting in a crowd only to come back to see that he has made new friends. That joyful grin on his face. The camaraderie I had with him has been the foundation of my life. I have loved our journey here and I hope that you will too.

— Bernard

对的人,会愿意倾听你那些看似不循常规的想法;
他们陪你一起走过岁月,一起成长、一起学习;

《Camaraderie》

Jimmy 首次与 6 岁的女儿同台演出;
伟结、哲浩和吴冲与柳韵一起拓展作曲的新旅程;
Deafbeat 培养了新的甘美兰演奏者;

Standing at high ground, the lead drummer sounds the beat to beckon fellow drummers to a percussion feast. Akin to timely rain, the call is expressed with counts of beats symbolizing thunder from the 1st of the 24 solar terms, Lì Chūn (The Start of Spring). The call beckons creatures and plants to start engaging in movement in the woodland, where hundreds of flowers bloom.

Today, drummers use canes as drumsticks – the tender and firm rattan symbolizes a pen of wisdom, and a powerful sword. As if competing in percussion skills, drummers interact with each other through music. They respect and appreciate each other’s musical works. Flowers Thrusting reminds us of the vigour of the mountains and rivers, gathers the warmth of our hearts and minds to inaugurate the percussion feast.

An original work by Wan Wai Keat (Jack) which debuted at the Hua Zhong Literary Awards in 2022, it was an opening drum feast to welcome world-class literary talents to a prestigious event. Returning to what he is meant to do, Jack revisits his composition to include elements of martial art movements. He draws inspiration from the warrior characteristics of the Five Greats in legendary battle ‘Duel on Mount Hua.’ Talent alone does not make one a warrior. It takes hard work, sacrifice, persistence, foresight. Working with trusted collaborator and friend Leow Yunn ‘Flowers Thrusting’ is an integration of the martial art world into a musical duel ensuing on stage between new and existing musical and performative elements, and our musicians. Like the battle on Mount Hua, sparks will fly!

是拳脚比划,亦是以乐交锋;

Emi Ch’ng, Jimmy Ch’ng

Life unfolds like a long symphony — each instrument reflecting the bonds that shape our journey.

The prelude of this performance begins with HANDS’ principal percussionist, Jimmy Ch’ng, performing alongside his daughter, Emi. Within the tender resonance of the handpan, a flower quietly blooms.

My Flower is adapted from “Daylily (萱草花)”, the theme song for the film Hi, Mom (你好,李焕英) — lyrics by Li Cong, composed by Akiyama Sayuri, and performed by Zhang Xiaofei. Rooted in love, its melody carries the warmth of kinship — a seed of beauty passed down through generations, blossoming anew in the harmony between father and daughter.

Jimmy Ch’ng, Sara Heng, Chuah Yuwen

In this modern representation for the traditional guzheng, Jimmy Ch’ng plays the drums alongside longtime friend and internationally renowned guzheng player Sara Heng. The drums and guzheng call and respond to each other. Their sounds interwoven with the depth of friendship, carrying the power of legacy. The guzheng’s ability to adapt to modern and international music reflects its robustness and versatility. As with long term relationships that last because of people’s ability to reflect, learn and adapt. Sara is not just a close friend and fellow musician, but also the first to lead Emi, Jimmy’s daughter onto her journey with music. Emi started her guzheng lessons with Sara not too long ago. The transition between friendship and mentorship are intertwined within the melody of this composition, weaving kinship, and growth into a song about walking through life in reflection and with openness.

A new composition by HANDS Percussion’s resident Japanese culture fan Yamato, this piece features the taiko drums and the Japanese art of drumming as a centrepiece. Taiko drumming embodies energy, movement, technique and most of all attitude. It is this attitude and the dramatic nature of taiko drumming that leads ‘The Taiko’s Duel’ to take on a ‘Duel in the Mist’ a piece presented by the ITA Ensemble in its debut concert ‘Around the World in 80 Minutes’. This turns the stage set for the taiko drums into a stunning musical duel with the addition of the gendang, shigu drums, guzheng, pipa, samisen and the flute.

Emerging composer Yamato presents a reworkedTaiko’s Duelafter its debut in 2023, elevating his composition where the taiko drums pulse like heartbeats, driving each drummer forward. Each strike is a dialogue with the wind and thunder, infusing passion into each beat. Within the reverberations of the drum, we hear not just rhythm, but the power and soul of life itself.

太鼓如心脏般跃动,推动身体与灵魂向前;

The movement of the heart can transform into the movement of the body, and the rhythm of the heart’s pulse is conveyed through the sound of the drum and the power of the dance, revealing a person’s spirit and inner state. This fusion of drum and dance not only serves to express deeply held desires and longings, but also as a channel for releasing passion and energy. The harmony between the beat of the drum and the graceful movements of the body becomes a language that transcends words, connecting the inner world of human emotion with the outer world. Through this dynamic interplay, the boundaries between inward contemplation and outward expression begin to blur, creating a performance that is both intimate and universal, reflecting the complexity of human experience while touching on something deeply personal and collectively shared.

The music for Rhythm Within was composed by drummer and percussionist Tan Zhe Hao with no formal music training, just a growing passion and keen interest to explore composition and experiment with sounds and technology. It was a challenge requiring discipline and a steep learning curve. A self-reflecting quiet soul, his hard work and self-sufficiency together with dancer and choreographer Dr. Kathyn Tan’s open, honest, and organic approach to creating, sculpted the music into visible form where it debuted in HANDS Percussion’s Kaleidoscope 7 – Gendang Sedunia (2024).  In today’s revised version, the ITA Ensemble performs the music live with new electronic mixes, blending diverse cultural sounds to marry the drumbeats of our drums with dance once again.

The first clap of thunder, startles everything awake.
Returning to the original drumbeat, traversing the years,
it lands once more in our palms.
Bodies testing boundaries,
tradition and freedom, rules, and imagination,
pulling against and growing with each other.

Culture, time and experiences, puts forth new ideas, igniting creativity
while still deeply rooted in tradition.
Our direction remains within the power of the root,
generation after generation of hands, picking up drumsticks,
striking familiar rhythmic lines, always growing through time,
growing deeper with each beat.

Rhythm Ride was composed by Bernard in 2005 for his 2nd team to represent their independence and individuality as drummers and performers. “I wanted them to be trained and move like dancers and to use it as a tool through which rhythm can flow.” In 2009 it had its first revision with the addition of traditional masks and today in 2025 it returns reimagined with arrangement and choreography representing deeper layers of dialogue between generations. Rhythm Ride is the art of meticulous drumming, precise movement, and deep connection with one’s fellow peers.

Composed by 作曲: Teuku Umar Ilany
Performers 表演者:Kamarul Baiquni bin Kamarul Baisah, Jimmy Ch’ng, Jack Wan, Yamato Goh, Tan Zhe Hao, Taedeus Choy, Yujiro Ohmori, Chia Tit Wang, Moongfei Yee, Lim Pui Yi, Kow Mun Kit, Reid Yeap, Low Yik Chuan, Jo-E Yap, Tan Yeong Yin, Lim Wei Ying

Seventeen years ago, a young student Teuku Umar Ilany began his journey with HANDS. Today, he leads Gangsapura, a collective that reimagines Malay gamelan through a contemporary lens, while also serving as HANDS’ gamelan mentor.

In this performance, Umar presents two works:

Kencang Kenanga — like ripples spreading through water, each beat travels from the palm to the heart, expanding through time and memory.

Camaraderie — a piece performed together with DeafBeat and 8-year-old drummer Kamarul Baiquni, where the heartbeat of the drums becomes a bridge of connection.

Among the performers are Deafbeat, who began their musical journey seventeen years ago — learning to feel rhythm not through listening, but by feeling the pulse in their palms. The sound that resonated through the air now vibrates through the bones. Today, they return to the gamelan — its metallic resonance delicate yet profound, as melodies surface in their hands. Some sounds cannot be heard, yet they can still be felt — echoing deeply within the heart.

Teuku Umar Ilany,
《Kencang Kenanga》——
与失聪学生与马来孩童一同演绎,以鼓声为心,击响彼此;

Performers 表演者:Jimmy Ch’ng, Moongfei Yee, Reid Yeap, Yamato Goh, Yujiro Ohmori, Chia Tit Wang, Lim Pui Yi, Kow Mun Kit, Ricco Lim, Wong Chee Sam, Janice Kho, Siow Yee Tung, Yanny Lin, Adrian Khoo, Ng Zam Ming, Wong Jie Yi, Low Yik Chuan, Jo-E Yap, Tan Yeong Yin, Lim Wei Ying, Jeremy Si, Tham Ying Guan, Yong Kar Tim, Lew Hui, Loo Wei Hen, Grace Chan, Nick Ooi, Teh Shin Hui, Yvonne Wong

Some drumbeats run deep — rising from the bloodline, echoing through time. Some colours break from tradition, yet glow with even greater vitality.

In our hands, Teochew culture is not a relic, but a living pulse — a root that breathes. To create through tradition is to shape its core and carry its spirit forward.

Once, a white lion dance dared to challenge old taboos, its rhythm confronting silence and prejudice alike. Each strike of the drum becomes a dialogue with the past — where love and legacy are embedded in every resonance, and the voices of our forebears continue to resound.

In this encounter between tradition and the contemporary, mythic heroes come alive once more — they may be the young drummer, the dancing figure, the hands that guard our heritage, and the light that opens a path for the future.

有些鼓声,根深蒂固,从血液里涌出;
